Resource of the Week: Family Travel Tips with Wayfaren

Traveling with kids: it can sound both super fun and super intimidating at the same time! Maybe you’re making decisions about when, whether, and how to travel with your whole family. Especially if you have family (or friends) far away that you visit, or if you just enjoy traveling, there can be many decisions that go into making a trip successful with babies and kiddos.

While these decisions may not seem as important as weaning or potty training, many of us may need to travel with our kids at some point, and then all the accompanying decisions and worries can consume a big part of our time!

From talking to other families, it often seems like some of the biggest factors that influence travel decisions with kids are budget and preparations. It can be hard to find affordable itineraries and accommodations for a family, as well as fun and affordable “to dos” once you arrive at a destination.

A family friendly travel resource, Wayfaren answers many of these questions! I first discovered Wayfaren on Instagram when I was preparing for a trip with my family and looking for travel resources to help us plan and budget. Luke and Abby, the founders of Wayfaren, offer helpful articles about saving money and family travel tips. While a big focus of their resources is on credit card points, budgeting, and how to maximize savings when traveling with a family in tow, they also feature some great resources for travel planning with a family. If you’re planning or thinking about traveling with kids, you’ll want to take advantage of their resources.

Tips for Family Travel

Check out the family travel page on their blog for tips – both road trips and flying suggestions for how to set your family up for success. You can read about close to home ideas as well as traveling internationally. There are also packing tips and how to manage all the “stuff” when you’re traveling with a crew. Deciding what kind and how many bags to bring and how to organize all your gear is a big part of the process and can be especially overwhelming if it’s your first time traveling with your kids.

These tips are especially helpful if you’re new to traveling with your kids, or making decisions about how to best make a trip to visit family or friends, or for another reason.

How to Do it On a Budget

Whether travel is necessary or optional for your family, it can be expensive to take multiple family members, especially when paying for flights. Wayfaren offers a helpful beginners guide for families on how to obtain and use credit card points for travel. They answer many FAQs about specific recommended credit cards, how to manage points, and how to find the best deals. They also share great resources about finding flight deals, including which websites to check, how to be flexible with your travel dates, and the best times of season and year to check for deals.
